Industry Aware of Cellphone Cancer Risk in 1994
The cell phone industry knew back in 1994 that their phones caused DNA damage, but chose to ignore the facts and continue to lie about cell phone hazards.
In a private meeting at the 1994 conference of the Bioelectromagnetics Society, Dr. Henry Lai of the University of Washington in Seattle presented the findings of a study he conducted with fellow scientist Dr. N.P. Singh that showed that microwave radiation at cell phone levels caused DNA damage.
The study's results were shown to Dr. George Carlo, the industry's lead scientist charged with studying cell phone safety and Motorola's top scientist Dr. Quirino Balzano. While the study used some rather new technology and was less than perfect, the results were accurate. The researchers acknowledged that more research needed to be done and were seeking funding to continue their research. However, the industry had no interest in supporting such research, nor did the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Dr. George Carlo was the head of a $25 million industry funded 6 year research project intended to show that cell phones were safe. However, Carlo actually wanted to do honest, independent research and present the facts about cell phone hazards. The studies were peer-reviewed by Harvard University and included some of the world's leading scientists. The first 18 months of the effort was spent developing better technology to conduct the research so that results would be highly accurate and beyond question.
The results of the studies were presented to the industry in 1999 and showed that microwave radiation at below cell phone levels did indeed damage DNA and posed a serious health hazard. The research results were received quietly by the industry and then buried along with all of the other studies that showed microwave radiation to be harmful. Even today, after hundreds of studies have shown microwave radiation at below cell phone levels to be extremely damaging, the wireless industry continues its big fat lie that "cell phones and wifi are safe".
In 1993, a Motoroloa representative made the outlandish claim that over 1,000 studies had proven cell phones safe. When pressed to provide some of the studies it turned out there were zero relevant studies. The studies conducted by George Carlo were supposed to have provided the proof of safety but showed the opposite.
The industry now claims that there are 6,000 studies proving that cell phones are safe and none that show hazards. This is another flat out lie.
It is true that since the Carlo studies, the industry has produced hundreds of bogus studies and studies that are simply not relevant. This is the same tactic used by the tobacco industry and it gives corrupt govt. agencies the '"weight of evidence" excuse in which the quality or relevance of research is not a consideration, only the sheer volume of data.
