Radiation in the Food Supply Still a Serious Threat
Food tested in California is still showing harmful levels of radiation. The lack of testing in other regions does not mean the food grown there is safe.
Levels of radioactive iodine have started to drop in North America due to the shift in wind patterns from Japan while levels of cessium 137 have been persistent and continue to accumulate in the food supply.
Unfortunately, the only non-governmental organization claiming to measure the radiation in food is the University of California's Berkely Department of Nuclear Engineering, which is like the mafia providing statistics on crime rates. Given the high degree of curruption within UC Berkeley and its incestuous relationship with the nuclear power and war industries, it is highly likely that the measurements are very conservative or simply fraudulent.
It is glaringly obvious that UC Berkeley is untrustworthy when they compare exposure to cessium 137 to an airline flight from San Francisco to Washington DC. The non-ionizing radiation received in an airliner is entirely different than exposure to the cumulative ionizing radiation being spewed out by Fukushima. In an airliner one is exposed to cosmic rays as they pass through the plane and one's body, along with microwave radiation generated by the planes equipment and passenger's cell phones and magnetic fields generated by the engines and plane passing through the air. Once the plane lands the exposure ends and the body can repair any damage. Breathing, drinking and eating radionuclides (radioactive particles) causes prolonged exposure because once the particles enter the body they generally stay there. As the particles decay they damage cells and DNA. In the case of cessium 137 the exposure for most people is life-time.
Since no one reliable is measuring the radiaiton we simply don't know the real levels and have to use what little we do know along with logic to make a reasonable assessment of the risk.
If you are an adult, eating a radioactive California strawberry probably won't kill you right away but the accumulated radiation may certainly cause long-term health problems that could result in cancer and premature death. Children are especially vulnerable. Recent data from the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shows a 35% increase of infant deaths in Northwestern states since Fukushima radiation reached the US.
Unlike iodine 131 which has a half-life of 8 days, the half-life of cessium 137 is 30 years. Because cessium 137 accumulates in the environment and the human body, the risks will likely continue to increase for decades after the source of radiation in Fukushima is contained. Since the amount of radiation from Fukushima is increasing and will likely continue to increase for some time, when the wind shifts back towards North America the amount of radiation will continue to increase as will the risk to human health.
I have elected to avoid food produced in Japan, California, Hawaii or British Columbia and have stocked-up on pre-radation frozen and canned food. I will grow more of my own food in a greenhouse using water which has been filtered through a water softener and multiple high-quality carbon filters mixed with water filtered by reverse osmosis.
Over a million people died from the radiation spewed out from Chernobyl. Millions will die from the radiation from Fukushima. While I can't eliminate my exposure to the radiation I can certainly reduce it.
